James Meeker: The Biggest Surprises of World Travel

What surprised you most about adopting this lifestyle?

I’ve been amazed at just how friendly people are. Obviously you have to be careful, but in general, people are really excited to have the chance to connect. They want to get to know you and your story, as long as you show interest in theirs. Many times when they hear my Texan accent, that’s all it takes to start a conversation.

Do you have any quotes you live by?

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” – Mark Twain

What exciting plans do you have for the future?

Whenever I’m getting on a plane or train, I post a picture of me at the doorway saying “Here we go again.” Then everyone wants to know where I’m off to. The answer is always,“No spoilers.” I have big plans coming, so you’ll just have to wait and see!
